The United States Postal Service released a statement reminding mail carriers and recipients about a common holiday scam.

Brushing is when third-party sellers send packages to people who did not order them. The items are usually not expensive, but once they are sent, that address can be confirmed as a verified purchaser, so a fake positive review can be made.

While the scam isn’t aimed at making the package recipient pay for the item, it can indicate that someone’s information has been leaked to nefarious people on the internet.

“Once this personal information is online, it can be used for various crooked enterprises,” the release from USPS said.

USPS recommends filing a report with the Postal Inspection Service if you get a package you didn’t order. It further recommends changing
