While clouds of tear gas and antic sideshows have become commonplace at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in South Portland, a quieter but no less staunch activist group is convening outside a federal building in Eugene.
About a dozen or so demonstrators bearing signs and flags have gathered regularly outside the Eugene Federal Building, 211 E. 7th Ave., which houses offices for a variety of agencies, including ICE.
Ruth Kornfield has been attending the protests regularly for six weeks. She and her friend Jean Murphy wore pointy hats and black attire, both in the spirit of Halloween and to match the garb of some of the younger activists, they said.
“I feel very, very, very strongly against ICE in general, but also how they’re functioning — it’s cruel,” said Kornfield,
