Indigenous chiefs in Alberta and the surrounding regions have opposed a Metis-led initiative to acquire and manage land in their traditional territories with an aim to prioritize ecological conservation and promote Metis culture.
The chiefs of the Tsuut’ina Nation, Bearspaw Nation, Chiniki Nation and Goodstoney Nations on Wednesday issued a unified statement condemning the expansion of the Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas, also known as IPCAs, into their treaty territories.
“The leaders of the aforementioned Nations stand in solidarity with other First Nations in opposition to the (IPCA) initiative and oppose any action by the Metis Nation of Alberta that could encroach onto Treaty lands,” the statement read.
