JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — You may have heard claims that NASA scientists confirmed the Earth has a second moon, but that statement isn't totally true.
NASA did confirm there is a newly discovered “quasi-moon.”
A quasi-moon is an asteroid that moves in sync with Earth. It’s not a real moon because it’s not impacted by Earth’s gravitational pull, but it orbits the sun in a way similar to Earth, therefore staying in Earth’s shadow.
This quasi-moon is called “2025 PN7.” It was originally discovered by the University of Hawaii earlier this year and is estimated to be about the size of a small building.
Although newly discovered, it is not new. Scientists estimate it has been orbiting with us for about 60 years, previously undiscovered due to its small size. It is expected to stay on pace with th
