CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Republican leaders and families of homicide victims are calling for change after a weekend of violence.

Mecklenburg County GOP leaders said on Wednesday that the upcoming election is a time to bring in new leadership focused on public safety. Democrats said they’re also advocating for safety measures just through different avenues.

The families of homicide victims’ main message was accountability for violent offenders.

Republicans said that means a change in leadership, but Democrats say it goes back to funding and investing in the community.

Claudia Hemingway’s son was shot and killed in 2019.

“When will lawmakers think about victims and realize this is a pain forever?” Hemingway said.
