BERLIN, Conn. (WTNH) -- It's been one year since Wethersfield firefighter Robert Sharkevich was killed in the line of duty during the Hawthorne fires in Berlin.
On Wednesday, his family and fellow firefighters gathered for a ceremony honoring Sharkevich.
Sharkevich has two sons who are now both Wethersfield firefighters. His youngest son, Kayden, just became and volunteer firefighter and his older son, Rob, has a locker right next to his dad's, which has been retired and now has a plexiglass shield around it to preserve it as a personal memorial.
"I come in, I grab my gear, I get on the rig, and every time I come in, I'm always looking at it," Rob said. "You know, it's special."
