Under the leadership of Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, the Pentagon has launched an extraordinary and deeply troubling war on the press.

Claiming its intent is to protect “national security,” the department imposed new restrictions on how journalists can access and report on the military, a policy that will shield the department from public scrutiny and allow it to operate in virtual secrecy.

The Pentagon demanded media outlets sign onto the terms it presented to be granted access to cover the nation's defense efforts.

The response was a near-unanimous rejection of the new policies by journalists, which means that for the first time since the Eisenhower administration, no major U.S. television network or publication will have a permanent presence in the Pentagon.
