A West Australian man made a lucky escape moments before the school bus he was driving burst into flames on South Western Highway near Boyanup this morning.

The bus was on its way to pick up students from the nearby town of Donnybrook for the school run to Busselton.

There were no school children on the bus at the time of the incident.

At the scene the driver told the ABC he saw the engine light come on and began pulling off to the side of the road when he saw flames coming from the rear of the bus.

He exited the bus immediately and minutes later it was engulfed in flames.

A triple-0 call was made at 6:52am and volunteer firefighters from Boyanup and Donnybrook responded to extinguish the blaze.
