The N.W.T.’s chief public health officer (CPHO) is warning residents about carfentanil mixed with powdered cocaine found in drugs seized in Hay River.

Carfentanil is a synthetic opioid, and approximately 10,000 times more potent than morphine and 100 times more potent than fentanyl.

In a public health advisory Wednesday, CPHO Dr. Kami Kandola said beige powder seized on Sept. 11 had tested positive for carfentanil, cocaine, and phenacetin — a pain-relief drug that’s been discontinued due to dangerous side effects related to kidney damage.

Carfentanil has been detected in N.W.T. drugs in the past, but never in powdered cocaine.

Anyone who suspects an overdose should call 9-1-1 or their local health centre.
