(WVNY/WFFF) - Vermont's junior senator is touting a new bill that cracks down on robocalls.

Recent studies show nearly 50 million U.S. adults have reported losing money to an online scam or attack.

The bill is called the "Foreign Robocall Elimination Act." Senator peter welch says it's impossible to track down on scammers outside of the country, so we need to come up with technology to protect our phones.

"Really, we've got to stop the calls. Because the reality is that threatening a fine to a foreign entity that comes and goes. And moves from here and moves from there. It doesn't have a physical location, and it really doesn't have a corporate entity. It's not a fine you're going to be able to collect," says Welch.

The legislation would create a task force made up of members of the FC
