MIDDLEBURY, Vt. (NEWS10) -- Vermont State Police are joining the search for a missing Middlebury College student. Lia Smith, 21, was last seen around 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17.

State police are helping with the search at the request of the Middlebury Police Department. Middlebury police have already used drones and conducted focused ground searches. A larger-scale search of wooded areas on and next to the college campus happened Wednesday.

The first full-scale search with state police will take place on Thursday. Other agencies assisting in the search for the California native are New York State Police, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents from the Swanton Sector, and the FBI.

Police have also asked college staff to continue searching all campus facilities.
