Natalie Carr recorded 31 kills and 25 digs to lead Canon-McMillan to a 3-1 upset of Hempfield in the opening round of the WPIAL Class 4A playoffs in a match played Wednesday at Gateway High School.
The Big Macs (12-7) were seeded No. 10 in the 14-team bracket, while Hempfield (12-5) was No. 7. The win marks the fourth consecutive year Canon-McMillan won in the first round.
"Natalie is our go to hitter, but we also had a strong performance from Journee Scott who had 20 kills," Canon-McMillan coach Sheila Mitchell said. "It's great to have them as a 1-2 punch. It makes it harder on opponents to defend us."
Setter Carsen Brown had 30 assists and four aces, while the Big Macs' other setter Katie Wing had 16 assists.
The win earns Canon-McMillan a berth in Saturday's quarterfinals against N
