MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — A mother's violent death in the Mobile community was on the minds of those gathered in Sage Park for the Penelope House Domestic Violence Awareness Walk.

The organziation holds the event every year with a new theme. This year's theme: awareness is key.

"It's been about two years since I went through a really traumatic event. My ex-husband shot me in the head. It was a superficial wound, so it wasn't very likely to have injuries," Rebekah Smith, a domestic violence survivor, said. "It took a huge toll on my life. And Penelope House really helped me overcome it and found my voice again."

Events like these are held to bring awareness to the community and empower other survivors to speak out about their experiences.
