Google CEO Sundar Pichai on Wednesday, October 22, announced a major breakthrough in quantum computing, revealing that the company’s Willow chip has achieved the first-ever verifiable quantum advantage, marking a milestone toward real-world applications of the technology.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Pichai said, “New breakthrough quantum algorithm published in @Nature today: Our Willow chip has achieved the first-ever verifiable quantum advantage.”
According to Pichai, Google’s newly developed algorithm, called Quantum Echoes, ran 13,000 times faster than the best classical algorithm operating on one of the world’s fastest supercomputers.
To put it simply: While a top classical supercomputer might take hours or days to perform a molecular simulation at high accuracy, Willow could
