EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Those in Indiana who receive SNAP benefits, also known as food stamps, may not be getting any help in November because of the government shutdown.
According to the USDA, funding for SNAP was sufficient to continue through October, but if the shutdown continues, that funding won’t be enough heading into next month.
Those with Evansville’s West Side Food Pantry have noticed a steady rise in community food need, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Back to normal everyday life, numbers are going back up,” chairperson Anthony LeBarron said. “Inflation, food costs, utility bills, as everything goes up, people have less money for food.”
And if SNAP gets cut, that need could be even greater.
