A veteran broke down in tears on BBC Breakfast as he opened up about his struggles after serving in Afghanistan .

Steven Ford featured on the BBC show on Thursday (October 23) to mark the start of the Royal British Legion's annual Poppy Appeal, which supports the armed forces community.

He shared how after two decades in uniform, including a tour in Afghanistan, he faced tough battles when he came home.

"There's been relationship breakdowns. I think they're the worst," he said. "I've been in, like, two mental health institutions. I have suicidal thoughts daily."
