Over the past few days, social media users, as well as some opposition leaders, have been up in arms over reports that anti-corruption watchdog Lokpal floated a tender to buy seven BMW luxury sedans. Former Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant is the latest to join the debate, saying in a cryptic post that "those wanting to buy BMWs" should switch to 'Make in India' EVs.

On Thursday, Amitabh Kant, who served as India's G20 sherpa from July 2022 to June 2025, posted images of his new Mahindra XEV9, saying that he was "embracing born electric mobility".

"It has a highly innovative design, advanced EV technology and superb driving performance... The shift to EVs is not just about vehicles - it is about powering India's progress with cleaner air, advanced technology, and a robust domestic industry,"
