Joey Fields and Kevin Whiteman didn’t necessarily set out to schedule what stacks up as one of the most intriguing games in the West Virginia high school football season.

Rather, as it got late in the scheduling cycle before the 2025 season, Herbert Hoover and Frankfort simply still had holes in their slates.

“I don’t want to say we were in panic mode,” said Whiteman, the 16th-season Falcons coach, “but we both really needed a game, and just decided to say the heck with it and give it a whirl.”

And so the scheduling stork brought a matchup on Friday in Short Gap of two teams who made state finals appearances in their respective classes last season, and who appear squarely in the mix to be playing in Charleston on the first weekend in December once again.
