Spiders can be found in spades this time of year, both the fake Halloween variety as well as a large yellow species crawling around certain parts of South Carolina.
Arachnophobia aside, not much about the real ones are all that scary in real life. That includes the Joro, or Trichonephila clavata, an invasive Asian species that has now spread from Boston to Atlanta — including inundating the Upstate region.
New studies published Oct. 22 in the Journal of Medical Entomology and Journal of Economic Entomology found that spiders rarely bite, including Joros. Another bright point is when Joros do, it doesn’t hurt all that much — according to the researchers, of course.
