Weather alerts for Storm Benjamin are now active as swathes of the UK face torrential downpours and powerful gusts.

The Met Office has put four yellow weather warnings in place over potential chaos on Thursday from Storm Benjamin, which has been designated by Meteo France.

The brutal conditions could trigger flooding, power outages and transport mayhem, the UK weather service has cautioned, with the storm anticipated to track from the English Channel towards the North Sea throughout Thursday.

Forecasters have also warned that structural damage to properties remains possible, with a slight risk of casualties and threats to life from massive waves and debris hurled onto seafronts and coastal routes.
