Amid reports that federal agents will soon gather just outside San Francisco, Mayor Daniel Lurie assured San Franciscans on Wednesday that city police officers won’t assist federal deportation efforts and will protect the right to peacefully protest.

Lurie also signed an executive directive that he said would “strengthen The City’s support for our immigrant communities.” It will ensure they get “the resources and the accurate information they need” from The City’s government and local immigrant-advocacy organizations, including the San Francisco Rapid Response Network, Lurie said.

Flanked by city officials and legislators, Lurie said in remarks delivered at City Hall that “uncoordinated federal action” doesn’t “make our city safer. It terrorizes our communities.”
