As part of a federal investigation tied to alleged sports gambling, one person reportedly arrested was Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups.
According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the head coach was arrested by the FBI. The news followed reporting about an arrest of Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier. The Eastern District of New York and FBI director Kash Patel are set to announce more arrests at 10 a.m. as part of this sports betting probe.
ABC News reported that Billups was charged in an illegal poker operation and this is a "separate but related" betting case related to Rozier's arrest.
Was Chauncey Billups gambling on the NBA?
That much was initially unclear considering Charania's reporting just indicated that it was "alleged illegal gambling" that caused his arrest.
But the allegation for Billups is not that he was gambling on basketball.
ABC's reporting that it was due to poker operations tied to the Mafia suggests that this is part of a larger investigation into gambling, not just betting on sports.
What happens next with Chauncey Billups?
The Athletic's Joe Vardon confirmed Billups was taken into custody.
He was arrested in Oregon and is expected to make his first appearance in court on Thursday.
Who is coaching the Trail Blazers with Billups arrested?
Update: Per ESPN's Charania, Tiago Splitter will get the interim role. Bjorkgren was also considered. Billups was placed on immediate leave by the NBA.
We don't yet know exactly how much time Billups will miss following his arrest.
However, in his absence, the lead assistant coach for Portland is Nate Bjorkgren. He will probably get the immediate nod for Billups in the interim. He previously served as head coach for the Indiana Pacers and has also worked as an assistant for the Toronto Raptors (twice) and Phoenix Suns.
Others on his staff include former NBA big man Tiago Splitter, Patrick St. Andrews, Quinton Crawford, Ronnie Burrell, and James Posey.
Chauncey Billups career earnings
During his 17-year career as a professional basketball player, the 2004 NBA Finals MVP made $106.8 million.
He played for eight teams and was named an All-Star five times. After his career, he worked for ESPN and then as an analyst for the Los Angeles Clippers before joining the staff as an assistant coach for the Clippers.
Chauncey Billups' contract with Portland
Billups was hired as head coach of the Trail Blazers in 2021. He signed a multi-year extension with the Trail Blazers in April 2025.
His new deal extended until the 2027-28 season, according to reporting.
