COLUMBUS, Ohio - An Ohio Senate bill would require public schools to teach a three-pronged theory that states that people who complete at least a high school education, work full time and marry before having children are less likely to live in poverty in adulthood.

The three-pronged theory is called the “Success Sequence.” But researchers have noted it does not produce the same results across the board.

Scholars from the center-left Brookings Institution first wrote about the concept that eventually became the Success Sequence in 2003, although 2015 Brookings research showed that Black Americans are less likely to get out of poverty if they follow the sequence than white Americans.

The Senate passed SB 156 on Wednesday with a party line vote of 24 to 9. The bill now heads to the Ohio
