CHICAGO — A federal judge on Wednesday extended a temporary restraining order preventing the deployment of National Guard troops in Chicago, following an agreement between the state of Illinois and the federal government.

U.S. District Court Judge April Perry said the extension would allow both parties time to submit comprehensive legal briefs and motions as the state’s lawsuit against the federal deployment proceeds.

“The extension ensures the court receives well-reasoned arguments before making a final determination,” Perry said in her ruling.

The restraining order, initially issued last week, bars federal authorities from sending troops into the city pending further legal review. Illinois officials argue the deployment would violate state sovereignty and disrupt local law enforcement
