Imagine the scene at a North Jersey diner several decades ago: Basketball coaches Dick Vitale, Hubie Brown, Rollie Massimino, Mike Fratello, Richie Adubado and Jerry Tarkanian diagramming pick-and-rolls at the table using salt and pepper shakers, debating their concepts so forcefully that they were disturbing other patrons.

The conversation eventually had to move outside, into the parking lot.

“Now they’re using garbage cans as the players, and they’re making an awful lot of noise,” Carol Adubado, Richie’s wife, recalled. “Someone calls the police. All the cops (who responded) were former players of these high school coaches – so no one got arrested. It was, ‘You know what? This is New Jersey and this is what we do.'”
