PARADISE, MI – A duck with a crazy hairdo and thin bill was rescued last week from a fishing line that was tightly wrapped around its beak, according to the Michigan Audubon.
Frank Fabbro, a fall waterbird counter for the Audubon at Whitefish Point Bird Observatory in Paradise, spotted the distressed red-breasted merganser on Friday.
“I was set up in the 20 mph (southeast) winds when an odd grunting sound made me look up from the scope,” Fabbro said in his weekly blog . “A single red-breasted merganser was waddling up the dune in our direction. Besides being up on dry land and walking towards a group of birders, the bird clearly had something else wrong.”
The duck had a knotted ball of fishing line and leader wrapped tightly around its serrated bill, he said. Fortunately, there wa
