“I guess this government doesn’t want any working-class people in London.” That was the response of one London MP to Housing Secretary Steve Reed’s announcement that developers will no longer be required to build as many affordable homes in the Capital.

Amid “anger” and “upset” from the Labour benches, Reed has agreed to temporarily cut the proportion of affordable homes developers must contribute to housebuilding (via something known as Section 106) from 35 per cent to 20 per cent per new development.

As well as that, he has agreed to pause Community Infrastructure Levy contributions, which are charged on developers to pay for everything from new roads to GP surgeries. New Feature
