A Chicago Bears jersey that belonged to Hall of Famer Red Grange sold Wednesday at auction for more than half a million dollars.
The rare memento from the “Galloping Ghost’s” nine-season NFL career was part of Christie’s “American Greats: Vintage Sports and Hollywood from the Dr. G.B. Espy Collection.” and sold for $548,100.
The cream-colored jersey circa 1933-34 — with navy and orange stripes on the sleeves and No. 77 in felt letters on the front and back — had been expected to sell for between $100,000 and $300,000.
In total, the auction’s 174 lots realized almost $8.5 million combined. A pinstripe New York Yankees jersey worn by Lou Gehrig in his last game at Yankee Stadium brought in $2.7 million. Elvis Presley’s personal Bible sold for $12,600. Marilyn Monroe’s U.S. Department of D
