President Donald Trump’s approval rating sank to a level not seen since Richard Nixon last sat in the White House, according to a new poll of Americans.

The latest Gallup poll , released Wednesday, showed 40.3% of Americans approved of the way Trump was handling his job as president. This rating covers the third quarter – and 19th quarter overall – of his second term, which spanned July 20 through Oct. 19.

According to historical Gallup data , only Nixon, at 31.8%, had a lower approval rating than Trump among post-World War II presidents in their 19th quarters. Nixon left office before the end of that quarter, resigning on Aug. 9, 1974, due to the Watergate scandal – before the House of Representatives could vote on impeachment articles.
