MARTINSBURG - The Berkeley County Commission voted Thursday to allow the sheriff’s department to formally partner with federal immigration authorities through a program with the Department of Homeland Security.

The program allows trained deputies to assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in identifying and processing individuals living in the country without legal permission encountered during routine law enforcement duties. The county will be eligible for reimbursement for time and equipment spent on such cases.
