CLARKSBURG, W.VA. (WV News) — Halloween is a fun and festive time, but experts at the West Virginia Poison Center (WVPC) encourage parents to use caution and prioritize safety while trick-or-treating.

The WVPC provided guidelines for parents on candy and costume safety to prevent accidental poisoning.

Regarding candy safety, the WVPC advises parents to inspect all treats.

"When in doubt, throw it out," experts said.

Parents are advised to "throw away all candy with faded, torn, unwrapped, or partially wrapped packaging."

To help reduce the temptation to eat uninspected candy, the center suggests a preventative step: "Feeding children dinner before trick-or-treating can help reduce the temptation to snack on candy that hasn’t been inspected."
