YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) -- Marquaysha Driver woke up to a parent's worst nightmare.

Testifying in her own defense Thursday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, the 31-year-old Driver said she was awakened early Oct. 22, 2023, by a pop, then her son ran into her bedroom.

"I woke up to a pop," she said as she was sobbing. "My son came running in the room. I asked, 'What was that?' and he was like, 'I shot my brother.'"

The boy, De'Vonte Driver, 7, died after being shot by a loaded handgun found in his mother's home in the 300 block of East Marmion Avenue. Marquaysha Driver is charged with involuntary manslaughter and four counts of child endangering for her son's death.

Testimony began in her case Wednesday before Judge Anthony D'Apolito after a jury was seated Tuesday.
