Monk Boudreaux, the beloved Big Chief of the Golden Eagles Mardi Gras Indian tribe, appeared at Thursday’s New Orleans City Council meeting to accept a special honor. Council member JP Morrell announced that the corner of Valence and Magnolia streets would henceforth be named for the octogenarian Black Masking Indian and singer.
The “Big Chief Monk Boudreaux Honorary Intersection” is near Boudreaux’s home, where he and his fellow Golden Eagles debut their new suits on Mardi Gras morning, continuing an age-old, entirely unique New Orleans tradition. The corner will eventually be marked with a special sign.
