KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) - It is School Bus Safety Week, and officials want to remind drivers that keeping students safe on their way to and from school is a responsibility we all share.

A one-day survey conducted this year found 200 illegal bus passings right here in West Virginia.

Bus drivers have reported seeing close calls every week — usually because of distracted or speeding drivers.

According to West Virginia law, if you pass a stopped school bus, you could face a minimum $500 fine and even up to six months in jail for your first offense.

Jimmy Lacy is the director of transportation for the West Virginia Department of Education.

He said it is important for drivers to pay attention to school buses and stop when their lights are on and safety bar is extended.
