Royal Canadian Legion Branch 56 in Port Colborne is counting on the community to provide support as Remembrance Day approaches.
On Wednesday, president Harry Hamilton and poppy chair Tex Kiser joined Mayor Bill Steele to kick of the legion’s annual poppy campaign, which will start being visible across the city on Oct. 31.
That’s when local businesses become equipped with poppy boxes and legion members start standing outside grocery stores and pharmacies to accept donations in exchange for a symbol of freedom that residents can wear proudly.
“We look forward to it every year,” said Hamilton after Steele was pinned with the first poppy inside council chambers at city hall.
Last year’s campaign brought in about $18,000 and the legion aims to bring in the same amount.
