Postal workers in Toronto are intensifying their campaign for a new contract with Canada Post by targeting local Liberal MPs. Members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), supported by the Toronto and York Region Labour Council, plan to distribute flyers to homes in ridings represented by Liberal MPs this Saturday. The flyers resemble official government notices, featuring a small Canadian flag and the title "Public Notice Re: Canada Post." They warn residents that their mailboxes are scheduled to be permanently closed on September 25, 2025, stating, "Your mail and parcels will no longer be delivered to your home." This date coincides with the federal government's approval of a significant restructuring plan for Canada Post. Following this announcement, CUPW initiated its second national strike within a year, which transitioned into a regional, rotating strike on October 10. One flyer specifically targets Davenport MP Julie Dzerowicz, stating, "Davenport MP Julie Dzerowicz is permanently closing your mailbox." The flyers also raise concerns about increased delivery times and the distance residents may have to walk to retrieve their mail. One section reads, "Your average mail and parcel delivery time is set to double, meaning you’ll wait longer for your mail." Another warns, "Your mail will now be delivered up to 500 feet away from your house — that’s longer than a football field. Rain or snow, you’ll be walking to get your mail." Canada Post has criticized the flyers, calling them misleading. Spokesperson Jon Hamilton stated, "This flyer is misleading and will cause unnecessary stress for homeowners." He explained that the transition from door delivery to community mailboxes will occur gradually over the next few years, with local engagement to inform residents about the changes. CUPW organizers argue that the flyers are necessary to alert residents about the potential loss of home delivery. Mark Lubinski, president of CUPW’s Toronto local, said, "I believe that’s the intent. This is for residents to wake up, to understand they will be losing their home delivery." He noted that residents in his densely populated neighborhood are concerned about losing this service. Jack Copple, an organizer with the Toronto and York Region Labour Council, echoed these sentiments, stating, "We’re sounding the alarm, and people should absolutely be scared of the changes that the Liberal government’s bringing in. It’s an attack on tens of thousands of Canadian jobs." The restructuring plan, announced by Minister Joël Lightbound, includes eliminating home delivery for some households, converting to community mailboxes, and closing certain rural post offices. It also extends delivery times for standard mail. Copple criticized the government's actions as contradictory to the promises made during the election campaign. He stated, "This is a time where we believe that we should be building up and expanding Canadian infrastructure to build a strong and independent Canadian economy." In his September announcement, Lightbound emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "Canada Post is now facing an existential crisis." He noted that the Crown corporation has incurred over $5 billion in losses since 2018 and is projected to lose $1.5 billion in 2025. Lightbound added, "Canadians can’t be footing an ever-growing bill year after year."
