JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WTAJ) — The city of Johnstown is remembering longtime Tribune-Democrat publisher and community leader Richland Mayer, who helped guide the region through some of its most difficult decades.
Mayer died at age 95, according to his family.
Mayer joined the Tribune-Democrat in 1956 and became a publisher in 1963, leading the newspaper through major events including the collapse of Johnstown's steel and coal industries and the devastating 1997 Flood.
According to our media partners at The Tribune-Democrat, Mayer's leadership and determination helped the paper continue printing even as floodwaters surrounded its downtown office. He also played a major role in the community's recovery efforts, helping organize what became the Tri-County flood recovery program.
