COLUMBIA — Construction is underway for 14 affordable homes near Providence Road and Hickman Avenue. Columbia nonprofit Central Missouri Community Action received funding last year to start the project, according to past KOMU 8 reporting.
According to a housing study put together by the city of Columbia and Boone County , Columbia is between 5,000 and 6,000 homes short for the community.
Darin Preis, the executive director for CMCA, said he hopes these 14 homes will be a helpful start to address housing in Columbia.
"We're really targeting folks who have been renting," Preis said. "They can afford to pay a mortgage they just haven't been able to save up for that down payment, and so this is a really nice first step into home ownership."
