A 31-year-old Cumberland County man was charged with arson and related charges after police say he started a fire inside his cell at the State Correctional Institute in Camp Hill last week.

Police said Daquian Brown used an electrical outlet to ignite bedding in his cell just before noon Friday, filling the E block with smoke and requiring the evacuation of 37 incarcerated people. He was the only person inside his cell, which is in the prison’s restricted housing unit, police said, but he denied starting the fire.

An affidavit of probable cause filed against Brown gave the following account:

Security footage at 11:56 a.m. showed an inmate performing his job on the upper tier of E-block, who alerted three corrections officers to smoke coming from Brown’s cell.
