BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —
The Community Food Bank of Central Alabama is feeling the strain of meeting the needs of local families and federal employees due to federal budget cuts and the ongoing government shutdown, resulting in a loss of 3 million pounds of food.
Starting out 2025, the food bank anticipated challenges because USDA cuts led to this reduction, impacting the 12 counties it serves, which equates to about 2.5 million meals.
Nicole Williams, CEO of the organization, expressed concern for federal employees who are not receiving paychecks, as well as SNAP and WIC recipients.
"We do know that in the community foodbank 12 county footprint, there are 16,000 federal employees that are currently not working," Williams said.
