SANFORD, Fla. — For the past two years, our investigative team has introduced you to families across the state still waiting to get home after their homes were destroyed by Hurricane Irma in 2017.
The homeowners are part of the Rebuild Florida program, which was given hundreds of millions of dollars from the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). That funding was awarded through Community Development Block Grants. The CDBG funds are available to help homeowners in communities repair homes.
HUD awarded more than 80 cities and counties across Florida funds in 2024 — some to help rebuild after storms, while other money went to help low-income homeowners make needed repairs they otherwise could not afford.
