IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - The Department of Homeland Security and ICE have requested a pause in the immigration case against University of Iowa students during the shutdown.
In April, a lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court challenging ICE’s termination of student statuses for three University of Iowa students and one University of Iowa graduate.
While the lawsuit is not challenging the cancellation of the visas, it argues that having a student visa revoked is not grounds for revoking a student’s status.
Each student was meeting their requirements to maintain their international student status, according to the lawsuit.
DHS has asked the court to dismiss the lawsuit, saying it has retroactively reinstated the students’ statuses.
