NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. (KCAU) — Some of North Sioux City's earliest growth is tied to the advent of gambling in South Dakota and dates back to the 1980s.
Within these buildings behind Luke, you can find the highest concentration of video lottery machines in the entire state of South Dakota. It's why some people call the strip "Little Vegas."
Joanie Christiansen, owner of Skyline Bar and Casinos, said, "It was basically just a bedroom community. People lived here, and they shopped somewhere else, and they worked somewhere else. But it was a small, quiet little town."
That all changed in 1989 when the South Dakota legislature legalized video lottery. It drew crowds from all across the tri-state area to test their luck, all while boosting the economy in North Sioux City.
