LONGVIEW, Texas (KETK) -- The City of Longview Police Department was awarded a federal grant of $250,000 to help Longview police better serve the homeless.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) announced that the City of Longview was awarded a federal grant of $250,000 through the COPS Hiring Program, which provides resources to hire law enforcement personnel and prevent crime.

Longview Police Department Chief Anthony Boone stood in front of the City Council to explain how the funds would help the police department, particularly to hire two new POST officers. "I think it will increase the resources that are available for EMS and police and actually get folks the help that they need," said Boone.
