TORONTO — The jokes write themselves. This time Shohei Ohtani was finally, truly on a plane to Toronto, ha ha.
And it’s true, the two-way superstar Ohtani’s here now — although as a Dodger and an almost-Jay, he may not get the best reception when he’s announced for World Series Game 1 on Friday night.
Two winters ago, folks around here (and elsewhere) became convinced that Ohtani might actually eschew the long-favored marquee Dodgers in his free-agent derby to sign with the long-shot Jays. The Jays were even told at one point they were in the final two, and with Ohtani setting the price at $700M deferred, they understood the richer Dodgers weren’t going to outbid them.
Eventually though, the chalk came in and Ohtani signed with the Dodgers for the deal he proposed to five finalist teams
