The Crystal Mall in Waterford has a big-name new owner.

General Dynamics Electric Boat has announced they have purchased the entire mall complex except for the Sears store.

The plan is to convert it into multi-use business space.

“At least twice a week we walk,” Stacey, from Groton, said.

She was surprised to hear the news of the acquisition and said she would need to find a new place to walk with friends.

The mall has been a Southeast Connecticut staple since it opened in 1984. But the years since the pandemic have not been kind, most of the storefronts inside remain empty.

When asked if she has watched the decline in recent years, Stacey said, “Oh definitely.”
