TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) - More than 20 Tucson families received an unexpected surprise at the checkout line when a good Samaritan decided to pay it forward by covering their grocery bills.

The generous act unfolded at the Food City near 22nd Street and Country Club. Store managers reported that 81-year-old Vietnam veteran George Hurd entered the store around 1 p.m. on Wednesday and informed employees of his intention to pay for everyone's groceries, extending his generosity beyond those already in line.

Hurd, who grew up poor, shared his motivation for the unexpected gesture.
