The Election Commission has completed preparations for the intensive revision (SIR) of voter lists nationwide, set to begin in November. The program is designed to ensure completion even in states holding elections in May 2026.

The new voter lists are expected to be ready in all states by March 2026. Election officials have been directed that Aadhaar cards will be accepted as the 12th document for voter verification.

Purpose of updating voter list

The Election Commission has prioritised Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry, where elections are due by May 2026, for the intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The SIR aims to remove duplicate entries and ensure all voters are Indian citizens.
