Authorities in Essex County are investigating a deadly shooting that claimed the life of one person in Newark overnight, officials said.
According to preliminary information, the incident occurred just before 12:30 a.m. when a ShotSpotter device detected gunfire near the intersection of 16th Street and Springfield Avenue.
Responding officers arrived to find an unidentified victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite emergency efforts, the victim was pronounced dead a short time later.
Detectives from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force responded to the scene and are leading the investigation.
No arrests have been reported, and the motive for the shooting remains under investigation. Additional details were not immediately available
