A 30-year-old man in New York state has been arrested for allegedly killing his 29-year-old girlfriend after she and the couple's 4-day-old baby were found dead in the family's upstate apartment following a fire last weekend.

Hidane Haile was taken into custody and charged with one count of second-degree murder in the slaying of Kathleen "Katie" Carrig, authorities announced.

According to a news release from the Erie County District Attorney's Office, firefighters with the Buffalo Fire Department at about 8:35 a.m. on Oct. 18 responded to a call about an ongoing fire in the first-floor apartment of a multi-family residence in the 400 block of Norwood Avenue. The residence is about 280 miles west of Albany.
